Enhance Your Vision
2.9 million Americans deal with low vision. A low vision evaluation maximizes visual function.
Do you struggle with reading, writing, driving, or completing tasks because of your vision? Low vision could be the culprit.
The National Eye Institute (NEI) estimates 2.9 million Americans have low vision. Lenses, medications, or surgery cannot correct this condition.
Tiffany L. Chan, OD, FAAO Low Visionย Rehabilitation Instructorย of Ophthalmology treats clients at the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins University. A range of ocular conditions, such as trauma and genetic factors, causes low vision. Common reasons for low vision in clients at Wilmer, according to Dr. Chan, are age-related macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and glaucoma.

NEI projects 5 million Americans will have low vision by 2030. Dr. Chan says that while low vision itself is not something new, โthe prevalence of age-related eye conditions is increasing as a reflection of the aging population living longer due to advances in medicine and technology.โ
Age aside, if your vision impairment stops you from engaging in activities, consider scheduling a low vision evaluation at a low vision clinic.

Clinics offer tools and techniques that increase visual function. Dr. Chan explains that, โlow vision specialists use a combination of lenses, prisms, and lighting to maximize a personโs ability to participate in those daily activities.โ Each patient requires individualized rehabilitation care, and specialists find those solutions based on specific needs and goals.
Ask your eye care professional to recommend a low vision clinic. Boost vision by actively coordinating your care. โAlthough vision rehabilitation is not a substitute for any medical care a patient may be receiving for his/her eyes,โ says Dr. Chan, โit will serve to make the most of the visual function. The process is very much dependent upon both the individual and the expertise of the doctor. Vision rehabilitation requires a team approach, and the patient is considered the star player.โ
