Carbon Monoxide At Owings Mills School, 1 Hospitalized: Officials

About 60 people were evacuated from a school in Owings Mills Monday due to a potentially hazardous situation.

OWINGS MILLS, MD — A school building was evacuated in Owings Mills Monday, and one person was hospitalized, according to the Baltimore County Fire Department. Officials said a carbon monoxide leak resulted in the closure of school Monday for safety reasons.

Crews were called to the Shafer Center in the 11500 block of Cronridge Drive for the report of a carbon monoxide leak at 11:17 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 25. The Shafer Center is a school for children with autism and other developmental delays.

First, school officials contacted BGE, which called 911.

About 60 children and staff were evacuated, according to fire officials, and fire crews said they found high levels of carbon monoxide, which can be dangerous. It was caused by incomplete fuel combustion, officials reported, noting that the school is next to the Maryland Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program station.

Shafer Center students and staff will not be allowed back into the building on Monday. Officials said one adult was taken for treatment with injures that are not believed to be life-threatening.
