WINDSOR MILL, MD — One person died and another was injured in a shooting outside the Golden Dragon Bar and Grill early Friday morning, according to police. The gunfight occurred after a Maryland Air National Guardsman witnessed a disturbance in the parking lot at closing time involving an armed individual and intervened, officials reported.

The guardsman, who had been a patron at the bar in the 8100 block of Liberty Road, called 911 to report the shooting and identified himself as an off-duty officer around 1:45 a.m. on Friday, July 12, police said.

He is a security forces member of the Maryland Air National Guard who has a gun permit, according to authorities.

The guardsman used his personal gun in the shooting, according to WBAL, which reported he has been a member of the guard since 2013 and returned in January from a half-year deployment in Kuwait. His job on the Air Force base entails protecting people, property and resources, a guard spokesman told the news station.

Officials said the guardsman saw a 36-year-old man with a gun in the parking lot involved in an altercation and ordered him to drop it, and when the other man did not drop the weapon, an exchange of gunfire followed.

Jerome Dewitt Garrison, 36, whose last known address was in the Irvington area, died as a result of the shooting and was pronounced deceased at the hospital, police reported.

Another man who had been in the area at the time was taken to an area hospital for treatment after he was shot in the upper body, authorities said.

Police reported that a gun was found at the scene.

The guardsman was not injured, according to the Baltimore County Police Department, which is investigating.

This was not the first shooting in the parking lot at this location; in June 2015, police said two men were shot in the parking lot after midnight on a Thursday.
