Eagles Endure Controversial Defeat at Dual Meet State Championsip

Previously unbeaten Owings Mills wrestling falls to Winters Mill in 1A/2A State Semis.

Owings Mills wrestling's first defeat of the season didn't come without a bit of controversy.

Looking to capture the 1A/2A State Dual Meet Title, the Eagles fell 40-29 in its semifinal match against Winters Mill at Linganore High School.

However, early on in the meet, Owings Mills senior Larry Johnson—who was leading 10-2 in points at the time—performed an illegal body slam on Winters Mills’ 160-pounder Allen Corbin.

When medical personnel determined Corbin was unable to continue, Winters Mill gained a seven point advantage with six points awarded on its behalf for an injury deferral and one point docked from the Eagles for a bad sportsmanship penalty.

Corbin would return to wrestle in the finals versus eventual champion Glenelg.

Owings Mills head coach Guy Pritzker told The Baltimore Sun’s Sanda McKee, “Am I bitter?" My kids wrestled their butts off and this is a hard way to get beat. Everyone will say Pritzker is a poor sport, but I've been on both sides of this kind of call. I respect the ref's call. But my kid was winning by a wide margin. He didn't intentionally slam his opponent. If the score had been reversed, I'd have sent my kid back out and then defalted so the kid who was winning on the scoreboard got the points. I've done that. It that why we lost? Yeah."

Patch will have more on the story and how the squad looks to rebound come the individual tournaments, later in the week.
