Giant Closing Store In Milford Mill: Report

The Giant off Liberty Road may not be the only supermarket the company will close, according to one official.

MILFORD MILL, MD — A Giant supermarket in western Baltimore County is slated to close in the coming weeks. And it may not be the only Giant to shutter, according to Baltimore County Councilman Julian Jones.

Jones — who represents parts of Owings Mills and Reisterstown as well as Randallstown, Woodlawn and Woodstock — said that upon learning the Giant off Liberty Road may close, he contacted Giant's parent company and the owner of the shopping center to see if there was anything he could do to help stop the closure.

The store in the 3600 block of Milford Mill Road will close, he said.

Since it opened in 1959, the store is in need of renovation, according to WBAL, which broke the news of the closure. New investment at the store was not practical, Giant said in a statement to the TV station. Instead, the company plans to focus on other stores that it says could better serve customers in the area.

The Giant off Milford Mill Road store will close on or around Aug. 16, according to Jones.

"Although it has not been confirmed, there is the possibility that this will not be the only Giant to close," Jones said. "Supermarkets are facing intense competition and are going through many changes, but I have been assured that Giant is committed to our community and has no intentions of leaving."

The councilman did offer some hope for those concerned about losing their go-to store for groceries.

Giant may also "build at least one very large and improved store in our area," Jones said.
