How to get to Preakness, which roads will be closed and other info about this year's race.

Transportation officials advise Preakness fans to take public transportation or carpool for Saturday’s Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course.

Gates will open at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, and the first post on Preakness Day is 10:30 a.m. Check out the events leading up to the races during Preakness Week and see what’s happening Preakness Day in the infield.

Post time for the 140th Preakness Stakes is 6:18 p.m. American Pharoah, winner of the Kentucky Derby, is the favorite.

Motorists traveling throughout northwest Baltimore may experience delays and should look out for pedestrians and changing traffic patterns, according to Baltimore City’s Department of Transportation.

The Maryland Transit Administration encourages using the light rail or metro. Here’s how to get there:

  • From Towson-Lutherville-Timonium-Hunt Valley-Southern PA: Take light rail to the Cold Spring Lane stop. Take connecting shuttle bus to Pimlico.
  • From Glen Burnie-BWI Marshall Airport-Linthicum-Severna Park-Annapolis: Take light rail to the Cold Spring Lane stop. Take connecting shuttle bus to Pimlico.
  • From Downtown Baltimore: Take metro subway from Charles Center or Lexington Market to Rogers Avenue Station. Take connecting shuttle bus to Pimlico.
  • From Owings Mills-Reisterstown-Glyndon-Old Court-Milford Mill: Take metro subway to Rogers Avenue Station. Take connecting shuttle bus to Pimlico.
  • From Mt. Washington-Falls Road-Cold Spring-Northern Parkway-Cross Keys: Take Park and Ride Express Bus from Poly-Western High School to Pimlico.
  • From Penn Station-Baltimore using MARC Penn Line weekend service: Take Penn/Camden light rail shuttle bus to University of Baltimore/Mt. Royal light rail. Stop and take northbound train to Cold Spring Lane light rail stop. Take connecting shuttle bus to Pimlico.

An MTA $3.50 day pass is required for all transit options. Shuttle bus service operates from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Return shuttle bus service runs all day to Cold Spring Lane light rail stop and Rogers Avenue metro subway station with expanded return service beginning at 6:15 p.m. and ending at 7:30 p.m.

  • Rogers Avenue – Closed from Winner Avenue to W. Northern Parkway
  • Bland Avenue – Closed from W. Northern Parkway to Rogers Avenue
  • Key Avenue – Closed from W. Northern Parkway to Rogers Avenue
  • Woodcrest Avenue – Closed from W. Northern Parkway to Rogers Avenue
  • Merville Avenue – Closed from W. Northern Parkway to Rogers Avenue
  • Stuart Avenue – Closed from W. Northern Parkway to Rogers Avenue
  • Rogers Avenue – One way westbound from Winner to Park Heights Avenues
  • Winner Avenue – One way northbound from Hayward Avenue to Northern Parkway

Saturday, May 16, from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m.

  • Southbound Jones Falls Expressway exit ramp to eastbound Northern Parkway will be closed. Motorists will be redirected to the Cold Spring Lane exits.
  • Cylburn Avenue – Closed from Northern Parkway to Greenspring Avenue.

Saturday, May 16, from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m.

  • Hayward Avenue – One way eastbound from Park Heights to Winner Avenues

Saturday, May 16, from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m.

  • Southbound Jones Falls Expressway exit ramp to westbound Northern Parkway will be closed. Motorists will be redirected to the Cold Spring Lane exits.
  • Northbound Jones Falls Expressway exit ramp to westbound Northern Parkway will be closed.
  • Westbound Northern Parkway - Closed from Falls Road to Greenspring Avenue.
  • Pimlico Road – Closed from W. Northern Parkway to Ken Oak Avenue.
  • Pimlico Road – One way northbound from Ken Oak Road to Greenspring Avenue.
