I-70 Speeding Enforcement Operation Nets 149 Citations: Police

Troopers targeted Interstate 70 for speed enforcement near the ramp to I-695 this week.

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — After six tractor-trailers jackknifed on Interstate 70 near the exit for I-695, Maryland State Police honed in on the area. Investigators said the crashes were caused by speed.

Troopers targeting the area for commercial vehicle enforcement this week issued 149 citations, including 68 speeding tickets, police said Friday, after a three-day operation that began Tuesday.

More than two dozen troopers from the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division and the Golden Ring Barrack participated, conducting 267 traffic stops. Their patrols focused on eastbound I-70 approaching the I-695 ramp.

Here was the result of the I-70 speeding enforcement operation:

  • 149 citations were issued
    • 68 speeding tickets were issued; 40 of these were for 80 mph or higher
    • Four drivers were cited for driving on suspended licenses, including one who was wanted on two open warrants for theft and theft scheme.
  • 149 warnings were issued
  • 146 truck safety inspections were conducted
  • 276 traffic stops were performed
  • 13 commercial vehicles and eight commercial vehicle drivers were removed from the road for safety, equipment or regulatory reasons.

Troopers used a new speed gun to measure the speed of commercial vehicles, according to officials.
