Lacrosse Stakes Claim to No. 1, Watley Wins at CAC: Stevenson Sports Roundup

Mustangs top rival Salisbury, 16-12, in battle of Div. III heavyweights.

Staking its claim as the best team in Div. III lacrosse, No. 3 on Saturday scored the game's first five goals and then cruised to a 16-12 win over host No. 2 Salisbury. Coupled with Endicott's 9-8 victory over No. 1 Tufts, the victory propelled the Mustangs to the nation's top ranking in Monday's USILA coaches' poll.

It marks Stevenson's third straight year at the top of the national rankings. Senior Kyle Moffitt scored a season-high four goals for the Mustangs (15-1, 8-0 Capital Athletic Conference), who completed their second unbeaten conference regular season in the past three years and extended their CAC regular-season road winning streak to 14. Stevenson will be the top seed in upcoming conference tournament.

Senior Jimmy Dailey also scored three goals. His 98 points this season has set a new school record, surpassing the old mark of 96 by current assistant coach Steve Kazimer. Stevenson led by as many as six before Salisbury (14-1, 7-1) opened the four quarter with three-straight goals to pull back within three. The Sea Gulls, however, could get no closer, and went on to suffer their first loss at home since losing to Stevenson in last April's CAC championship game.
