Maryland Tax-Free Shopping Begins Sunday

It's almost that time of year again—when you can buy clothing and footwear without paying Maryland's 6 percent sales tax.

This year, Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week runs Aug. 11-17, according to the Comptroller of Maryland website.

Tax-free items include sweaters, shirts, slacks, jeans, dresses, robes, underwear, belts, shoes and boots that cost less than $100. Other items—such as school supplies, backpacks, jewelry and other accessories—will still be taxed.

While Maryland shoppers have enjoyed the tax-free holiday for more than 10 years, the state has lost millions of dollars in revenue, according to Glen Burnie Patch. Maryland loses $10 to $15 million in tax revenue every year during the two tax-free holidays—one in August for clothes and shoes and one in February for energy-efficient appliances.
