Midseason Football Update: Opportunistic Defense Leads New Town
New Town is looking to make a return trip to the playoffs.

Five weeks into their season, the Titans have had only one blip on the radar—a tough double overtime defeat at the hands of Overlea.
In their four wins over Pikesville, Chesapeake, Dundalk and Randallstown, the Titans have outscored the opposition a resounding 146-6. In fact, after starting the season 1-1, New Town hasn’t allowed a single point in its last three games.
Attribute that dominance to an extremely opportunistic defense that’s forced 23 turnovers (over four per game) and collected 17.5 sacks.

“I’m definitely impressed with the way the guys are playing with a lot of intensity,” coach Joe Holland said. “We try and teach them every week to go out and be aggressive.”
Offensively, the Titans have benefited from a balanced attack that features multiple players carrying the ball. The backfield of fullback Gary Clark, wing backs Derrick Kittrell, Rayshawn Clark and Darrell Wyche and quarterback Shawheem Dowdy have given opponents multiple threats to worry about from game to game.

will look to improve to 5-1 when it travels to take on Lansdowne Thursday. Currently, the Titans own third place in the Class 2A North standings, and although they are focusing on one game at a time, they certainly have the big picture in mind and are looking to avenge a first round playoff knockout from a year ago.
“That’s our motto at this point—a championship mentality,” Holland said. “We approach every week as if it’s a playoff game as far as preparation, watching plenty of film. We’re trying to run a college atmosphere in high school to keep them hungry so they don’t become complacent.”
