New Town sophomore Jannah Tucker was one of 12 high school athletes from across the country selected to play on the United States Woman’s Under-16 basketball squad, which USA Basketball announced yesterday.

Tucker, a six-foot guard, made it through a group of 115 girls during a four-day trial in Colorado Springs, CO, to earn a spot on the team, which will compete from June 13-June 18 in Mérida, Mexico in the 2011 FIBA Americas U16 Championship. The top three teams will advance to play in the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championships.

“It means so much to me because I get to represent our country and help spread the word and help get people to respect and like America more,” Tucker said to USAbasketball.com. “It’s a great accomplishment and a great honor.”
