OM Volunteer Firefighter Murdered: Man Charged, Police Say

Another firefighter has reportedly been charged after a volunteer firefighter was found fatally shot in Baltimore.

BALTIMORE, MD — A Harford County man has been charged in the fatal shooting of a volunteer firefighter in Baltimore City. The victim, who was to join the Baltimore City Fire Academy this month, had served various companies as a volunteer in Baltimore County, including in Owings Mills.

Jon Hickey, 31, was found fatally shot at his apartment in the 1800 block of East Pratt Street on Nov. 30, according to police.

Officers said they went to his home on a check-on-the-welfare call.

Normally, Hickey was the one making checks on others; he was a member of the Reisterstown Fire Department and Owings Mills Volunteer Fire Company, according to the Lansdowne Volunteer Fire Department.

Baltimore homicide detectives reviewed video footage, combed through physical evidence and interviewed potential witnesses, and police said their investigation led them to the man now charged with murder.

Daniel Green, 35, of the 2100 block of Harkins Road in Norrisville, was arrested at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 5, police said. He was taken into custody without incident and charged with first-degree murder.

The motive for the murder was domestic in nature, Detective Donny Moses told Patch.

Green was a career firefighter from 2002 to 2013 with the Prince George's County Fire Department, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Police were called to Hickey's home after his girlfriend had not heard from him in two days and noticed his car had not moved, according to WBAL.

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to raise money for a charity to be decided by the family, "allowing Jon’s distinctive self-giving nature to live on after his passing," according to the campaign page. The goal was $3,000, and in three days the campaign had raised $3,350.
