Randallstown Man Charged in Referee, Gym Staffer Assault: Police

The man was charged with assaulting a referee after his team lost a rec basketball game.

The losing coach in a weekend recreation league basketball game faces an assault charge for reportedly poking a referee in the face and then punching a gym staffer.

Keith Scruggs, of the 4200 block of Herrera Court in Randallstown, was charged with second-degree assault Sunday after a basketball game, the Bowie Blade reported. The scuffle happened at the Bowie Gymnasium.

The referee said Scruggs walked up to him after his team’s loss, argued about the game and then poked him in the face with his finger.

As members of the gym staff escorted Scruggs and the coach of the other team out of the building, police said Scruggs allegedly punched one of the staff members in the back.

Prince George's County paramedics treated several people for minor injuries.

Police charged Scruggs with second-degree assault. He is scheduled to appear in Prince George's County District Court regarding the charge on May 21.
