Softball Eclipses 20-Win Mark, Men's Lacrosse Rebounds: Stevenson Sports Roundup

Mustangs sweep Albright to finish season with four straight wins.

Third baseman Desirae Sullivan went 5-6, scoring four runs and driving in three, as the host softball team swept Albright, 9-3 and 8-6, to wrap up its season on Wednesday.

The wins put the Mustangs (22-17-1) -- who earlier this month lost to Mary Washington in the quarterfinals of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament -- over the 20-win mark for the second straight year. They wrapped up the season with a four-game winning streak and took their final seven of eight, overall, after losing four of their first 12 to start April.

Senior Julianne Roper earned both victories on the mound, allowing just one earned run over seven innings and striking out five in the opener.

Men's Lacrosse Rebounds vs. Denison
Days after falling to rival Salisbury, the fourth-ranked Stevenson men's lacrosse team rebounded on the road Saturday with an easier-than-expected 14-2 win over No. 15 Denison.

The Mustangs (17-2) took a 3-0 lead after the first quarter and quickly extended it to 8-1 by halftime.

Jimmy Dailey, the nation's top point producer, led the way for Stevenson with two goals and four assists. Tyler Reid (four goals, one assist), Kyle Moffitt (three goals) and Neal Barthelme (two goals, three assists) also played starring roles for the Mustangs, who outshot Denison, 49-18.

The Big Red fell to 10-3, overall.

Stevenson now has several days to prepare for the NCAA Div. III Tournament, where it will likely be an at-large selection when play begins May 11.

Women's Tennis Falls to McDaniel
Despite defaulting in two of the scheduled matches, the Stevenson women's tennis team still nearly pulled off a victory over McDaniel Monday, but a 7-4 loss in the tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles gave the host Green Terror a 5-4 win in the season finale for both teams.

Stevenson (6-12) won four of the five contested singles matches, including at No. 1 singles where junior Stephanie Eyler won 7-6, 6-2 over Brittany Starlings, extending her win streak to four. Eyler is now 13-3 on the season.

Freshman Jordan Rupard and junior Michelle Huber were straight-set winners at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively, while senior Julie Strong posted a three-set victory at No. 3 singles.

The Green Terror (3-15) broke a 4-4 deadlock when Sara Yost and Devan Hamric scored the final three points to claim the final doubles match.

Still, Stevenson finished the season with six wins, twice as many as a year ago and the most since the 2006-07 season.

Women's Lacrosse Falls to Elizabethtown
What began as a season of promise for the Stevenson women's lacrosse team ended with a thud Thursday, as the host Mustangs concluded their schedule with a 9-4 loss to No. 17 Elizabethtown.

It was the second straight loss for Stevenson (10-7), which also fell to Mary Washington in the semifinals of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament.

Mandy Marston, Marissa Meiklejohn, Megan Weiss and Lisa Baker each scored goals for the Mustangs, who committed 28 turnovers and converted just one of five free-positions. Marston gave Stevenson the early lead before Elizabethtown answered with seven of the next eight goals, including a game-high three by Sarah Cullinan.

Men's Tennis Falls at McDaniel
Teaming together for the first time since March 29, the Stevenson men's tennis duo of junior Ted Cooke and freshman Brian Bollman posted the Mustangs' lone victory in last Monday's 8-1 loss to host McDaniel.

The loss was the fifth in the past six on the road for Stevenson (5-12), as well as its second-straight against the Green Terror.

Cooke and Bollman scored the team's lone highlight of the day, topping Ben Faber and Chad Palman in No. 1 doubles. The win snapped a six-match losing streak for Cooke and Bollman, who had won their first three decisions of the season.

McDaniel (7-11) swept all six singles matches to clinch the victory and snap a three-match losing streak.
