Gary Stewart succeeds Brett Adams in bid to turn around struggling program.

on Tuesday named former Div. I head coach Gary Stewart as its new men's basketball coach, succeeding Brett Adams, who resigned in March to focus on his role as athletic director.

Stewart most recently served as head coach at the University of California, Davis from 2003 to 2011. There, he led the Aggies' reclassification from Div. II to Div. I, culminating in 2007 when they joined the Big West Conference.

All told, he has led his teams to 230 career victories, four conference titles and six postseason appearances in 18 collegiate seasons. He also earned four straight all-conference selections as a player at the University of La Verne in the early '80s.

"I am very excited about having him come on board," said Adams, who had led Stevenson for the program's first 17 seasons. "It was humbling to see so many top caliber candidates from over 200 qualified applicants that we had for this position."

The Mustangs have gone 21-80 over the past four seasons, losing at least 19 games each year.
