Stevenson Women's Soccer Upset in Playoffs

No. 6 seed St. Mary's beat the Mustangs in Owings Mills Wednesday night.

The women's soccer team was a dealt a surprise knock-out punch by the Capital Athletic Conference Soccer Championship's No. 6 seed at Mustang Stadium, abruptly ending the No. 2 Mustangs' quest for a conference title.

Stevenson (12-5-3) now must wait for selections to the 2011 Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III South Championship. Teams will be announced Monday.

Lexy McCarty scored the game-winner for St. Mary's in the 66th minute, after the score was tied 1-1 since Jamie Matlock scored in the 32nd minute.

Stevenson held a 27-7 advantage in shots, but reigning CAC Defensive Player of the Week Kelsey Wirtz made seven saves in the Seahawks' 2-1 win.

St. Mary's plays Salisbury in the championship game on Saturday.
