Teacher Of Year Is Owings Mills Educator

The teacher from Lyons Mill Elementary School has been named the 2018 Baltimore County Public Schools Teacher of the Year.

OWINGS MILLS, MD — An Owings Mills educator has been named the Baltimore County Public Schools 2018 Teacher of the Year. Lyons Mill Elementary School teacher Brendan Penn was presented with the award on Wednesday night during the annual teacher of the year ceremony.

"Tonight was the greatest night of my life," Penn wrote afterward. "To be celebrated by educators I admire and respect was such an uplifting experience! I am honored to be the [Teacher of the Year] of such an amazing school system."

Penn, who teaches third grade, is in his third year at Lyons Mill Elementary.

Officials from Baltimore County Public Schools described him as a coach, passionate educator and mentor.

Now in his sixth year with the school system, Penn helped the Lyons Mill VEX robotics team qualify for the national competition in his role as the elementary robotics liaison for Baltimore County Public Schools.

Penn was one of six finalists in the running for the teacher of the year award.

He will go on to represent Baltimore County Public Schools in the Maryland Teacher of the Year competition, the winner of which is announced later in the fall.
