Three Local Seniors Nominated for Prestigous Award
Andre Johnson, Devon Hopkins and Stephanie Folkerts were honored Monday night for their nominations to receive the 2011 Charles P. McCormick Scholarship.

Students: Andre Johnson (New Town High School), Devon Hopkins (Owings Mills High School) and Stephanie Folkerts (Owings Mills High School).
Achievement: The trio of Owings Mills area seniors was nominated for the 2011 Charles Perry McCormick Scholarship which grants the winners (one female basketball player and one male football player) 36,000 dollars in college scholarship money. The honor was presented at the 71st Annual McCormick Unsung Heroes Awards ceremony in Hunt Valley.
Johnson, Hopkins and Folkerts are among the 107 students chosen as outstanding scholar-athletes representing 67 Baltimore area public, private, parochial and independent schools. Their relentless efforts—Johnson and Hopkins on the football field and Folkerts on the basketball court—in sports and in the classroom earned them the recognition for the honor.

The eventual winners (Alysha Davis of Pikesville and Michael Wright of Eastern Tech) were announced at a banquet Monday night at the Marriott Hunt Valley Inn. Although neither of the three took home the award, Johnson, Folkerts and Hopkins all represented their families and their schools in a positive fashion and deserve high praise for their endeavors on and off the field/court.
The Unsung Heroes program, established in 1940 by the late Charles P. McCormick, celebrates student-athletes who facilitate team success without seeking individual recognition.
