Titans Clamp Down on Defense, Earn Spot in Region Championship
New Town held Friendship Academy of Science and Technology to just 18 points in its Class 1A North semifinal win.
New Town may have struggled a bit finishing opportunities to score, but when you hold your opponent to single digit points through almost two-and-a-half quarters, it’s tough to complain about a lack of offense.
Wednesday night, the Titans pressed ball handlers, clogged passing lanes and generally made things very uncomfortable for visiting Friendship Academy of Science and Technology (FAST) en route to a 46-18 victory.
The Lady Cheetahs (13-7) didn’t reach double digit points until knocking down a free throw with 5:22 to play in third quarter to make the score 27-10.

For New Town (19-4), freshman guard Sidney Hines led the way, netting a game-high 25 points and sparking the Titans from the get-go. In the first quarter alone, Hines factored in to all 12 of New Town’s points, scoring eight herself and tallying assists on the other two buckets. She also added five steals for the game.
The trio of guard Jasmine Cole and forwards Destiny Taylor-Betts and MiShawn Conyers helped control the interior, combining for a total of 23 rebounds.

With the win, the Titans will more than likely travel to take on top seeded Western Tech in the Class 1A North Chamionship on Friday. The Wolverines knocked New Town off, 45-42, earlier in the regular season.
