Which Private College President in Maryland is Paid $1 Million?

Of 10 Maryland private colleges surveyed, one school pays its president an annual salary of $1 million annually, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education's annual report on executive compensation at private colleges.

Ronald J. Daniels, president of Johns Hopkins University, is ranked 30th out of 550 on the list of top paid private college executives. According to data from 2011, Daniels' total compensation was $1,184,535, with a base salary of $859,555.

The remaining top 10 are:

• Ronald J. Volpe, Hood College, $860,790 in total compensation, with a base salary of $298,401.
• Kevin J. Manning, Stevenson University, $641,546 in total compensation, base salary of $337,058.
• Mary Pat Seurkamp, Notre Dame of Maryland University, $558,797 in total compensation, base salary of $272,665.
• Christopher B. Nelson, St. John's College (Md.), $479,596 in total compensation, base salary of $280,000.
• Thomas H. Powell, Mount St. Mary's University (Md.), $478,081 in total compensation, base salary of $333,510.
• Roger N. Casey, McDaniel College, $435,731 in total compensation, base salary of $365,880.
• Sanford J. Ungar, Goucher College, $400,815 in total compensation, base salary of $335,646.
• Mitchell B. Reiss, Washington College, $363,184 in total compensation, base salary of $316,404.
• The Rev. Brian F. Linnane, Loyola University Maryland, zero compensation, no base salary. Linnane is a Jesuit priest.

The study notes that some Roman Catholic colleges -- including Loyola - whose presidents are members of religious orders pay no direct compensation to their chief executives, instead allocating money to the religious order. Compensation for these presidents may be reported as $0.
