Winter Weather Advisory In Effect For Parts Of Baltimore County

The National Weather Service updated its projections for wintry weather in northern Baltimore County and nearby areas.

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — The National Weather Service has changed its projections for wintry weather this weekend in Baltimore County, downgrading the winter storm warning it issued for Saturday instead to a winter weather advisory. During a warning, more precipitation is expected and travel is dangerous or impossible. Under an advisory, drivers are expected to use caution and travel difficulties due to periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain.

Parts of Baltimore County are under a winter weather advisory until 6 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 20.

Owings Mills, Reisterstown, Lutherville-Timonium and Cockeysville are under the advisory. Carroll County is as well.

Up to 2 inches of snow may accumulate, and up to 0.1 inch ice is expected during the winter weather advisory period.

Drivers should anticipate slippery conditions.

Across the region, weather officials issued a hazardous weather outlook for Sunday due to the potential for bitterly cold wind chills through Monday morning. It is expected to feel like it is below-zero Sunday night into Monday in central Maryland. In addition, there is potential in the second half of the week for flooding due to rain and snow melt, according to the National Weather Service.


PREVIOUS FORECAST (EXPIRED as of Saturday afternoon)— The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for northern Baltimore County and all of Carroll County starting Saturday afternoon. The warning calls for "significant ice with some snow and sleet."

A winter storm warning is issued when significant amounts of snow, sleet and ice could make travel hazardous or impossible.

The winter storm warning is in effect from 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, to 6 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 20.

About 0.25 inch ice and about 1 to 3 inches of snow and sleet are expected to accumulate during the warning period.

Power outages and tree damage are likely, according to the winter storm warning.

The National Weather Service also issued a hazardous weather outlook for bitterly cold wind chills from Sunday night into Monday morning. Wind gusts could cause damage Sunday afternoon into Monday.

Here is the forecast for northern Baltimore County from the National Weather Service:

Friday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 41 and low of 30. West wind around 7 mph.

Saturday: Snow after 11am, mixing with sleet after 5pm. High near 32. Northeast wind 5 to 10 mph becoming east in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow and sleet accumulation of around an inch possible.

Saturday Night: Snow, freezing rain, and sleet before 8pm, then rain or freezing rain between 8pm and 11pm, then rain after 11pm. Low around 30. East wind 6 to 11 mph becoming light and variable. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Sunday: Rain likely before 8am, then a chance of freezing rain and sleet between 8am and 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 32. Breezy, with a northwest wind 7 to 12 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 6. Blustery.

MLK Day: Sunny, with a high near 17.

Monday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 8.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 31.

Tuesday Night: A chance of rain and snow after 8pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 27. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Wednesday: Rain and snow likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 47. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Wednesday Night: Rain and snow likely. Cloudy, with a low around 32. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Thursday: Rain and snow likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 37. Chance of precipitation is 70%.
