At Oak Crest, an Erickson Senior Living community in Parkville, Md., staying active is part of everyday life for many residents. With a fitness center and group exercise classes just steps away, residents enjoy convenient access to programs that support their health and well-being.

Mike Sullivan, who moved to Oak Crest from Perry Hall in 2015, frequents the fitness center and attends a group class three times a week.

"Having the fitness center and classes right here at home is great!" says Mike. "I think classes like these help your physical and mental state. I've seen improvement not just in myself but in others. They're sociable, fun, and they offer something for everyone."

Something for everyone

Oak Crest's group fitness classes offer residents a wide variety of options--from high-energy dance fusion, line dancing, and Rock Steady Boxing, to calming yoga and tai chi, as well as water-based classes like Ai Chi, Mellow Moves, and Aqua Fit.

"The classes are well attended. With everything right down the hall, there's really no reason not to join," says Mike.

Most classes are designed for all fitness levels, and the fitness center also provides residents with a free fitness assessment and gym orientation to ensure comfort and readiness for exercise.

"We're thrilled to offer these classes," says Andrew Lingelbach, Oak Creat's fitness manager. "Many residents who have never tried group exercise are now attending and enjoying it."

He continues, "All of the classes we offer are based on the latest exercise physiology research and are designed with our residents' interests in mind. Work It!, our most popular class, combines cardio, strength training, and flexibility by focusing on a different body part each session, such as legs, arms, and core."

Convenient classes

As with most fitness routines, getting to the gym is often half the battle. For Oak Crest residents, however, the fitness center is just steps away. Classes are held in a spacious, multipurpose room connected to the fitness center, and climate-controlled walkways allow residents to easily reach classes in any weather.

"It's especially helpful on days with bad weather. Residents don't have to drive in the rain or heat. Plus, the short walk to the fitness center is a great warm-up," explains Lingelbach.

Compared to exercising alone, group exercise offers residents additional benefits. Scheduled classes and peer support help residents stay consistent, while the variety of programs keeps routines engaging and fresh.

A healthy move

Prior to moving to Oak Crest, Angela Davis did not belong to a fitness club or participate in exercise classes. Since taking the exercise classes at Oak Crest, she has noticed improvement in her balance and walking.

"It has definitely helped me and increased my confidence. Because of the instruction, I'm much more aware of what I need to do to keep improving," says Angela.

"The social aspect of group fitness is incredibly motivating. People attend class because their friends will be there," Lingelbach adds.

Angela finds the supportive environment in the classes to be a positive influence.

"During class, if I feel myself struggling, I look around and see that other people are struggling too, but they're still going. It motivates me to keep going," says Angela. "It's not just the residents around you, but also the staff. The fitness instructors support you and want you to succeed. You really feel their energy."

Personalized support

Lingelbach leads a team of three full-time staff and two part-time instructors, all dedicated to helping residents reach their wellness goals. Residents also have access to fitness assessments, consultations, tailored workout plans, and a variety of equipment.

"The staff is superb and so supportive," says Angela. "Without their help, guidance, and emotional support, I don't think I would have stayed with it. I am so thankful to have them and rely on them."

Linglebach, who is legally blind, is a certified inclusive fitness specialist. He uses his unique perspective to connect with residents experiencing changes in their abilities as they age. He and his team are always available to guide residents and maintain a safe, healthy environment.

"Andrew Lingelbach is an amazing young man," says Angela. "I don't think I've ever seen him without a smile on his face. He's just a total inspiration."

The positive relationships built between residents and staff are at the heart of Oak Crest's vibrant fitness community, inspiring everyone to reach their potential.

"I love the fact that every day I get to come to campus and work with people who want to better themselves. It is why I love my job!" says Lingelbach.
