Frugal Family: Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!
Dr. Seuss' birthday and Read Across America converge with family-friendly events.

"One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish" is just one of hundreds of catchy rhymes Dr. Seuss penned to make the simple pleasure of reading fun for kids.
Today is what would have been the legendary children’s author’s 107th birthday. Not coincidentally, March 2 is also the National Education Association’s annual Read Across America event, which encourages building a nation of readers.
There’s nothing I enjoy more than curling up with a great book, and I believe that came from my parents and grandparents sharing with me their love of reading from the time I was a very young girl. Although my daughter is just six weeks old, I look forward to the night that our bedtime routine includes her favorite tale.
In celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday and Read Across America Day, I’ve rounded up a few ways you can encourage literacy in your home. All are inexpensive (or FREE!), easy to do, and most importantly, fun!
- Visit the Seussville web site for activities, games and printables like Cat in the Hat Toss, Seussaphone and Tongue Twisters.
- Enjoy green eggs and ham—literally! Add a few drops of green food dye to scrambled eggs and pair with pan-fried ham. A fun twist on dinner!
- Check out an online storytime version of Green Eggs and Ham narrated by TV personality Rachael Ray.
- Buy one kids book at Barnes and Noble, get the second at 50 percent off now through March 7.
- Take 40 percent off all Dr. Seuss books and toys at Barnes and Noble during the entire month of March.
- Attend Borders Timonium’s Read Across America event on Saturday, March 5 at 2 p.m. They’ll have story times, games and arts and crafts for 6 to 10-year-olds.
