Loch Raven High Evacuated Due to Strange Smell

Students left the school building midmorning, police and fire crews are on the scene.

Update (11:33 a.m.)—Students and staff have returned to Loch Raven High School. A school spokeswoman said the unusual odor was caused by a routine refilling of the school's oil tank.

"The kids smelled the oil being put in the oil tank so everybody's back in school," said spokeswoman Phyllis Reese.

Loch Raven High School was evacuated shortly after 10 a.m. Friday after reports of an odd odor, according to Baltimore County police and fire officials.

"The building was evacuated due to a strange smell," said Julia Hardgrove, a police and fire spokeswoman. "That's all we know right now."

Towson Patch's Tyler Waldman was on the scene, where students standing outside the school were directed to move to the school's stadium a few moments ago.

A police and fire crew were on the scene at last check, and a hazmat team has been requested to assist in locating the source of the smell.
