Oak Crest Residents Go Down Cinematic Memory Lane

PARKVILLE, MD—The Oak Crest Speakers Series allows residents of the Erickson Living retirement community the opportunity to learn about the “Baltimore of yesterday, today and tomorrow.”

Their guest presenter on August 13, Amy Davis, provided them with a trip down memory lane.

Ms. Davis, an award-winning photojournalist with The Sun, previewed her upcoming book, “Flickering Treasures: Rediscovering Baltimore’s Forgotten Movie Theaters.”

The book tells the poignant story of Baltimore City through the architectural prism of its movie theaters, many of which were ornately designed “neighborhood theaters” with beautiful facades and eye-catching marquees.

During her presentation, Ms. Davis showed over 100 photos of older movie theaters located in Baltimore City. The photographs provided a historical “before and after” look at the theaters in their original and current forms. Many of the structures are now being used for non-cinematic purposes, such as churches and stores, while others are in decay.

Following the slideshow, Ms. Davis took questions and received first-person accounts from the audience of fifty residents, many of whom went on dates with their high school sweethearts in the movie theaters they had just seen.

“Live to Learn…Leave to Learn” is the motto of the Oak Crest Speakers Series. In this case, residents will travel to the Hippodrome Theatre on August 18th for a backstage tour of the iconic Baltimore arts center.
