I-695 Jam Near Old Harford Road Attributed to Backhoe

Delays on the outer loop of I-695 persisted through rush hour Friday evening.

UPDATED (10:45 p.m.)—Seven hours after a piece of equipment reportedly fell from a tractor-trailer, delays remained on the outer loop of Interstate 695 in the area of Harford Road.

On Friday afternoon, a backhoe hit the bridge, prompting lane closures in the area, ABC 2 News reported.

The man who had been driving the tractor-trailer that lost the equipment on I-695, a 55-year-old Arkansas resident was not injured, according to WJZ.

The Old Harford Road overpass reopened at approximately 6 p.m., according to the State Highway Administration, which reported at the time that two lanes on I-695 were closed.

Until 10:45 p.m., bumper-to-bumper traffic was still present on the outer loop as one lane and shoulder of Interstate 695 were closed and crews remained at the scene.

After 10:45 p.m., backups were beginning to clear and traffic was moving.

UPDATED (4:15 p.m.)—There’s a nearly 4-mile backup on the outer loop of Interstate 695 near Harford Road, according to the State Highway Administration.

The two right lanes were closed due to a crash, a closure which will likely continue through rush hour, the administration reported.

Teams will be on-site performing bridge inspections on I-695 near Old Harford Road, the report said.

Previous report (3:50 p.m.)—Delays were building on Interstate 695 for drivers headed south of Belair Road Friday afternoon.

Two lanes were closed on the outer loop of I-695 in the area of Perring Parkway due to a single-vehicle incident reported shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Friday, transportation officials said.

Construction equipment fell from a truck, according to WNEW, which reported just before 4 p.m. that traffic was stacked up to I-95.
