Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy, DC Greens, Walmart Break Ground on Urban Garden Expansion Project
Community Volunteers Join Organizations to Build Expanded Garden to Provide Education and Access to Healthy Food to DC Residents

On September 11, 2015, the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy began work on the 1,000 sq. ft. garden expansion project planned for their grounds. In partnership with DC Greens, and with funding from Walmart, the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy will provide holistic food education services to youth and their families participating in activities at its facility. In the role of โfood education curator,โ DC Greens will link services from various non-profits in the food education space into a comprehensive program at the Academy.
Walmart has committed a donation of $50,000 to the project which will result in the Academy acting as a healthy food education and healthy food access site for DC neighbors in the surrounding area. The company believes every family should have access to affordable, nutritious, sustainably grown food and has been working with organizations around the city to increase education and access for DC residents. Seed funding for the original garden project was provided by CoBank.
On September 11th, community volunteers joined these organizations to transform the current garden into an urban farm with ten rows, totaling over 1,000 sq ft. of food production space. Volunteers established the rows, planted fall crops, installed irrigation systems and repaired and built fences.
