BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — Eric Baummer, a 59-year-old man from Mount Airy, was charged with impersonating a police officer after he tried to execute a traffic stop this week.
The failed stop took place Tuesday around 4:30 p.m. on Interstate 695 in Baltimore County.
A release issued by the Maryland State Police states the agency was alerted to the incident after the person Baummer was trying to pull over called 911.
The driver, who was an off-duty military law enforcement officer, told the dispatcher that Baummer had flashed blue and white lights at him while driving in his Ford Explorer.
When the person did not pull over, Baummer drove past, changing lanes to drive in front of him. Baummer later exited the interstate at Hollins Ferry Road.
The off-duty officer, while still on the phone with the dispatcher, followed Baummer to a Lansdowne gas station on the 4300 block of Hollins Ferry Road.
State Troopers later arrived on the scene and arrested Baummer without further incident.
Court records show Baummer was released on his own recognizance for the misdemeanor offense.
An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
Authorities are urging residents to contact Maryland State Police at (410) 780-2700 if they find themselves in a similar situation.
