Cinco de Mayo In Perry Hall: Food And Drink Deals, History

PERRY HALL, MD — Cinco de Mayo means good deals can be had on great food in and around Perry Hall. We're talking cheap tacos, burritos and enchiladas, as well as margaritas.

Cinco De Mayo falls on a Sunday and celebrates the Mexican Army's victory over Napoleon III and French troops in 1862.

The British, French and Spanish reportedly invaded Mexico when the country decided to temporarily suspend repaying its debts. While the British and Spanish eventually withdrew troops, the French, backed by affluent property-owners, stayed in the country and tried to establish a monarchy under Maximilian of Austria.

Mexico won the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, leaving about 1,000 French soldiers dead. Fighting continued for another half-decade, but the battle became a symbol for Mexico, representing "resistance to foreign domination."

Today, May 5 is celebrated with parades, speeches and reenactments of the battle in the state of Puebla. However, it is celebrated with much less fanfare elsewhere in the country — it's not even a federal holiday in Mexico — and is often confused by Americans with Mexican Independence Day, which falls on Sept. 16. Mexico won its independence from Spain half a century before the Battle of Puebla.
