Officials said the Suzuki had minor damage and the Dodge crossed back over the northbound lanes on Campbell Boulevard before hitting a tree and catching fire.
First responders pronounced the driver deceased at the scene. The driver's dog, who was seen running after the crash, has been located, officials reported. Family members "took painstaking efforts to search the area" Saturday and again Sunday before locating the dog, police said.
