June 11-12: Pink Ribbon Days at Chapel Hills Nursery

in Perry Hall will be adorned in pink this weekend, while offering fun family activities and raising funds for breast cancer research.

The first-ever “Pink Ribbon Days at Chapel Hills” festival promises plenty of music, food, demonstrations and excitement for all ages on Saturday and Sunday, June 11-12, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Nursery owner Russell Berk, who is no stranger to hosting family-friendly events at his Chapel Road location, expects the hay wagon rides, face painting and pony rides to be very popular among younger attendees. For older festival-goers, Swan Song Spirits has arranged a wine tasting.

“That’s one of the ‘in’ things these days,” Berk says. “It should go over very well.”

Major assistance has come from County Councilman David Marks, who helped publicize the event and line up activities, such as a dunking booth. Marks said he will be among several community officials available to be dunked. Beth Ritter of the East County Times newspaper will run a silent auction. There will also be tethered hot-air balloon rides provided by RE/MAX, a display of Little Lancaster Amish-made items and more.

Berk says that 10 percent of all sales during the festival will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and visitors are encouraged to dress in pink to show their support.

“A lot of people who have been touched by breast cancer have been willing to help with the event,” says Berk, who explains that he got the idea for “Pink Ribbon Days” from Proven Winners, one of the leading brands of high-quality flowering plants in North America. The company sponsors an Invincibelle Spirit Breast Cancer campaign: With each sale of a pink Invincibelle Spirit hydrangea, Proven Winners makes a donation to the foundation. Dozens of these plants will be available for purchase during the festival.

Marks said he was happy to lend a hand to Pink Ribbon Days. “Like many residents of Perry Hall, I have friends and family members who have experienced the effects of breast cancer,” he says. “This is a terrible disease that seems to affect so many, and the festival is a wonderful way to raise funds for research.”
