Robbery Sparked Deadly Shooting Near Golden Ring Walmart: Police

ROSSVILLE, MD — Police said a man was killed outside the Golden Ring Walmart Sunday night after trying to rob someone he met online and had made arrangements with to buy a pair of shoes. Officials encourage people who are conducting in-person transactions to do so at Baltimore County police stations.

Kumar Jumar Burney, 20, of the 5300 block of King Arthur Circle, was found in the parking lot between Sam's Club and Walmart in the 6400 block of Petrie Way, where he had been shot, according to authorities. Police said officers found a loaded handgun on him before he was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.

Investigators said Burney had arranged to buy an expensive pair of shoes using a popular selling app, but during the transaction in the Walmart parking lot, he tried to rob the seller.

The seller shot Burney once in the upper body, called 911, stayed at the scene and was cooperating with authorities, police reported Monday. After homicide detectives wrap up their investigation, the Baltimore County State's Attorney's Office will review the case.

Transactions between strangers can be dangerous for both buyers and sellers, police advised, in the aftermath of the Walmart parking lot shooting.

Because of the coronavirus, people cannot go into the police stations, but they may use the public parking lots or streets in front of them to make their exchanges.
