MOMS & DADS TALK: Earth Day Awareness

What do your children know about the environment?

The next time that members from my generation (the 25 and younger crowd) start talking like they invented the "Green Movement," you have my permission to slap them in the face. Remind them that Earth Day was first held on April 22, 1970—almost exactly 41 years ago.

Much progress has been made over the decades. Who could have guessed that Baltimore County would adopt a single stream recycling program in 2010? Not only is it easy to follow, but officials say it has significantly increased recycling participation among residents. Paper, cardboard, plastic, glass and metal (with exceptions) are simply tossed into a single bin and collected once a week.

But recycling is just one component of promoting a cleaner planet. What do you do to live greener, and more importantly, how do you talk to your children about it?
