Police Shoot, Injure Man In Rosedale Accused Of Swinging Blades

A man was hospitalized after an officer-involved shooting on Philadelphia Road, police.

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — Police shot and injured a man who had reportedly been waving blades around Thursday afternoon in Rosedale. Officers said they later learned he had been due for a mental health evaluation.

Authorities said they were called to the area of Philadelphia Road at Chesaco Avenue for a report of man armed with a knife who was cutting down tree branches and throwing blades in the road. As officers were on the way, police said they were informed he was in the middle of Philadelphia Road swinging a long chain.

At 2:20 p.m., officers found the man on Spring Avenue near Philadelphia Road. One officer got out of his vehicle and ordered the man to sit, but instead the man started running at the officer, who ordered him to stop, according to police. The police officer started to move backward, and the man continued running, so the officer shot him in the upper body, officials said.

After he was shot, the man tried to run but was taken into custody following a short chase, police said. Medics took him to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center for treatment of an upper body injury. According to officers, he was conscious and alert.

Officials said during their investigation, they found out the man had been dropped off at a local hospital earlier for a mental health evaluation, but he did not go inside; then he took public transportation, according to police.

PREVIOUS REPORT — Police said an officer was involved in a shooting Thursday afternoon in Rosedale after responding to a call about a man holding a knife and a blade.

The man was hospitalized with an upper body injury, authorities reported, after officers were dispatched to Philadelphia Road at Spring Avenue at 2:20 p.m.

Police said the man was conscious and alert.

Until 6:30 p.m., Philadelphia Road/MD 7 was closed between Rustic Avenue and Kenwood Avenue due to police activity, according to authorities.
