Details about the vehicle involved in the pedestrian crash were not available, and police said the investigation was ongoing.
At 9:07 p.m., a silver Mercedes Benz crashed into a Baltimore County police cruiser that was assisting with the road closure on Pulaski Highway during the police investigation, officials said.
Another cruiser at the scene pursued the Mercedes, which fled until it struck the rear driver’s side of a Volvo C30 in the 5300 block of Moravia Road in Baltimore City, police reported.
The Volvo was turning right from eastbound Sinclair Lane to northbound Moravia Road when the Mercedes sped through the intersection, where there was a red light on northbound Moravia Road, according to the report.
The Mercedes pushed the Volvo, which spun clockwise, jumped the sidewalk, and continued spinning into a bus stop where a woman had been waiting with her 1-year-old son in a stroller, the report said.
Police said the Volvo hit the child, who landed near the entrance to the Parkside Shopping Center in the 5300 block of Moravia Road. The baby boy was taken to Johns Hopkins Pediatric ER, where died from critical injuries, according to police.
The Volvo driver was uninjured, and so was the driver of the police cruiser that was hit, the report said.
After hitting the Volvo, police said the Mercedes continued on for 250 feet and came to rest. The Mercedes driver was taken to shock trauma, where police said he is expected to survive.
Charges against the driver of the Mercedes are pending the outcome of two investigations, by both Baltimore County and Baltimore City officials. Baltimore County police continue to investigate the pedestrian crash on Pulaski Highway, while Baltimore City police handle the investigation into the 1-year-old’s death on Moravia Road.
