Perry Hall High School Hosts Senior Citizen Prom

Students served a free dinner to local senior citizens during the event Tuesday.

second annual was appropriately named "Singing in the Rain."

In spite of the dreary weather, dozens of attended the free dinner and dance in the school's cafeteria early Tuesday evening.

"It's not a bunch of old people with walkers—it is a vibrant, active bunch who come to this," said Susan Gerber, an English teacher who coordinated the dance portion of the event.

Last year's event was so successful, Gerber said, that teachers and students decided to continue the tradition.

Student volunteers from the National Honor Society and served and met with seniors.

"It's fun for us to help out. It's kind of like being with our grandparents," said Samantha Nhira, 15, a sophomore.

Mary Mohr, 84, attended the event with members of her bridge club. "We were here last year. We had such a good time," Mohr said.

Jerry Hammond, 67, said the event shed a positive light on local students.

"We see so much on the news that is bad about teenagers, but then they talk to us and it opens our eyes. It's nice to know that all of these youngsters are doing this," Hammond said.

co-advisers Dana Voso, an English teacher, and Todd Sautters, a social studies teacher, coordinated much of the prom.

"It's a nice little event," Sautters said. "Anytime you can get the public from the outside to come in and see , it's a worthwhile event."
