Perry Hall High School Receives Federal Grant after Shooting

The $35,000 grant comes from the United States Department of Education.

The U.S. Department of Education announced Thursday that it is awarding a $35,000 grant for trauma recovery to Perry Hall High School, where a shooting occurred on the first day of classes in August 2012.

The grant is part of of the School Emergency Response to Violence program, which funds recovery efforts in school districts where traumatic events have occurred, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Education.

Fifteen-year-old Robert Gladden Jr. was sentenced to 35 years in prison last month for shooting 17-year-old Daniel Borowy, a special needs student who was seriously injured in the Perry Hall High School cafeteria on Aug. 27.

"Information shared at the parent/community meeting and since the shooting indicates that parents and staff members remain concerned about the safety and security of the school setting and the capacity of the school to respond to a critical incident of this kind," the U.S. Department of Education stated in a March 7 press release.

The grant will enable Perry Hall High School officials to provide what federal authorities said were "much needed services" that have come to the fore since the August incident.

“Senseless shootings disrupt the lives of students, schools and communities,” U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said. “We hope these resources will help the learning process continue and support the community as it recovers.”

Perry Hall joins more than 100 grantees receiving this type of federal aid since the program's inception in 2001. Other districts awarded similar grants in recent months were Aurora, CO; Chicago, IL; and states impacted by Hurricane Sandy.
