Seven Oaks Senior Center Toasts 20 Years

The center held a wine and cheese reception in honor of its 20th anniversary Tuesday afternoon.

What do you get when you mix the with a few bottles of wine?

A lot of underage drinking jokes.

"People kept asking me why I wasn't carding them," center Director Lisa Kennedy said.

In honor of its 20th anniversary, the center held a wine and cheese reception Tuesday afternoon. The free, members-only event was part of a year-long celebration that kicked off in January with a .

In addition to snacks and drinks, the reception featured a live performance by the Pop N' Robin band. Lead singer Robin Sypniewski said her mother, Beverly Skurzynski, was an active member of the center before she passed away in 2007.

"She would be delighted to know that I performed for them," Sypniewski said. "Over the years, I attended many affairs at the center with my mom and I miss her dearly. I thought it was a nice idea to play for their affair today in her memory."

Since it opened in 1991, Seven Oaks has become a lifeline for Perry Hall's aging community, said Cathy Milando, president of the Seven Oaks Executive Board.

"It's about continuous learning. We even learned how to use our own cell phones," Milando said. "After retirement, sometimes you lose your way. Coming here is a great way to pick back up."
