UPDATE: Suspect Dead, Officer Shot After I-695 Chase: Police

Police pursuit went around Baltimore beltway Saturday morning, officials say.

Police fatally shot a juvenile driver who gave chase, hit a vehicle and fired at officers Saturday morning, according to the Baltimore County Police Department.

The individual, who led police on a pursuit from Catonsville to Essex, was pronounced dead at the scene in the area of MD 702 at Hyde Park Road, police reported. Multiple officers were involved in the shooting, police said.

Late Saturday morning, a Maryland state trooper on Interstate 95 south attempted to stop the driver of a Honda Pilot and pursued the vehicle until it drove across the median, crossed the northbound lanes and took the exit for MD 195, according to the Baltimore County Police Department.

Baltimore County police, who located the vehicle in the Woodlawn area, also attempted to conduct a traffic stop, and when the driver again refused to pull over, officers pursued him onto Interstate 695 east, police reported.

Traveling at a high rate of speed, the driver wove in and out of traffic, a witness told The Baltimore Sun, at least a dozen police cars on his tail “like a flock of seagulls,” a Perry Hall resident told the newspaper.

Police said the driver of the Honda Pilot—later described as a juvenile with connections to Kentucky—pulled off at MD 702/Southeast Boulevard, hit a vehicle where the road intersects Hyde Park Road and came to a stop.

When police approached the Honda Pilot, “...gunfire came from the vehicle, striking an officer,” police reported.

One officer was hit in the ballistic vest, according to the report from Baltimore County authorities.

“Officers then returned fire on the vehicle,” police stated.

Police said six Baltimore County officers fired their weapons during the incident, all of whom will be put on administrative duties as the incident is reviewed, which is standard procedure.

“The driver, an adult white male who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was declared deceased at the scene. The driver was found to have been armed with a handgun and other weapons,” police reported.

The officer who was hit was taken to shock trauma with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, according to police.

The Honda Accord the suspect crashed into had a man and two 11-year-old girls inside, according to police, who said they were taken to Franklin Square Hospital to be evaluated and were expected to be released soon.

Route 702 was closed between Middleborough Road and Turkey Point Road from approximately 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., transportation officials reported.
