After 5 Hours, White Marsh Crash Involving Box Truck Clears

The collision on I-95 north caused congestion near Baltimore, Harford county line.

A crash on Interstate 95 near White Marsh reportedly injured multiple people and snarled northbound traffic for several hours on Tuesday.

After 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, I-95 north was shut down past the exit for MD Route 43/White Marsh Boulevard due to a crash, transportation officials said.

The crash involved multiple vehicles and caused several injuries, according to the White Marsh Volunteer Fire Company, which reported that it responded to the scene, where a large box truck had traveled 35 to 40 feet into the woods, causing occupants to be trapped.

Crews freed the trapped individuals, one of whom was taken by medevac for medical treatment, according to the fire company. Two other individuals were taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview, the fire company reported.

The collision occurred when the box truck hit an unattended vehicle on the shoulder of I-95, according to The Baltimore Sun, which reported the driver was the individual who was airlifted from the scene.

By 6:30 p.m., the Maryland Transportation Authority reported that all lanes had reopened on I-95 north but delays remained.

Previous report: A section of Interstate 95 was closed to northbound traffic Tuesday afternoon near White Marsh for approximately one hour, according to transportation officials, who said backups were lengthy.

All lanes of I-95 north were closed as a medevac responded to a crash north of the exit for MD Route 43/White Marsh Boulevard, the Maryland Transportation Authority reported at 2:18 p.m. on Tuesday. Backups started at the I-695 exit and extended north, stretching approximately 3.5 miles, the report said.

Two right lanes had opened as of 5:15 p.m., according to the Maryland Department of Transportation. Officials were reconstructing the crash in the right two lanes, which remained closed, according to WNEW.

After 5 p.m., the Maryland Transportation Authority said that it would be approximately 60 to 90 minutes before the scene was cleared.

“HEAVY delays” on northbound I-95 persisted, the authority said in an update after 4 p.m., beginning before the I-695 exit and stretching north. Traffic was stacked up on I-95 north before Mountain Road, and there were “big backups” on Philadelphia Road, Belair Road and Pulaski Highway, WNEW reported.

By 2:35 p.m., two northbound lanes on I-95 past White Marsh had reopened, according to the Maryland Department of Transportation, which previously said all lanes of I-95 north had been closed for the two-vehicle collision that occurred at 1:33 p.m.

The Maryland Transportation Authority advised taking US Route 40 as an alternate route.
