Living History Lands at Perryville Middle School

'Amelia Earheart' will make an appearance in Cecil County this week.

On Friday night, a living historian will stop in Perryville to portray "Amelia Earheart" in a family-friendly performance that includes audience interaction.

Perryville Middle School will host professional actress Mary Ann Jung as Earheart in a 30-minute performance, with music beforehand and a raffle afterward, CecilDaily.com reports.

It is one of two stops in Cecil County on the Maryland Humanities Council's 2013 "Chautauqua" circuit.

Chautauqua was a movement named for the area in New York where it was founded in the 1870s as a means to provide distance learning for those without access.

"They were trying to bring Shakespeare and culture to people who wouldn't get that in small towns," Jung said in a video by The Baltimore Sun. "The whole idea of Chautauqua is to take arts and culture and, in this case, history to places that normally wouldn't get it."

In addition to Perryville, the 2013 Maryland Humanities Council's Chautauqua actors will make stops in Elkton and Bel Air this weekend.

Between July 5 and 14, the traveling theatrical troupe will have taken its show on the road to eight locations, from Baltimore to the Eastern Shore, according to the Maryland Humanities Council.

The free performance will be at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 12, at Perryville Middle School (850 Aiken Ave.) in the auditorium.
