Perry Point Pedestrian Injured on Route 40 in Elkton

A 51-year-old Perry Point man was struck by a vehicle on July 13.

A Perry Point man was injured over the weekend while crossing Pulaski Highway near South Bridge Street in Elkton, CecilDaily.com reported.

Mark Porter, 51, of Perry Point, was taken to Christiana Hospital with a broken leg and cut head after police said he "darted out into the traffic" around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, according to the report, which stated the driver of the Jeep that struck him has not been charged.

Porter lives at 1 Circle Dr. in Perry Point, online court records show.

According to a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 65 percent of pedestrians injured in 2011 were male. The administration advises people to use crosswalks whenever possible as well as to cross at intersections and in a well-lit area if neither option is available.

Weekends are prime time for pedestrian fatalities, the administration reported. Approximately 48 percent of pedestrian fatalities occur on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Evenings are also dangerous. Of fatal pedestrian crashes in Maryland, 73 percent occurred in the dark, according to the State Highway Administration.

Of all pedestrian fatalities nationally, 38 percent occurred between 8 p.m. and midnight, according to the National Traffic Highway Safety Admininstration.
