Perryville Wins State Track Championship

The Panthers came away with the 1A title for the second consecutive year.

The boys track team from Perryville High School placed at the top of their class this weekend at the state championships in Baltimore.

The Panthers' boys track and field team placed first among the 1A class, with Boonsboro, Pikesville, Bo Manor and Western Tech on their heels, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Morgan State University hosted the meet, which took place Thursday and Saturday.

It was the second year in a row the Panthers took home the title; get a glimpse of last year's victory on Cecil Scene.

At the 2013 competition, Perryville senior high jumper Brian Matthews gave the Panthers a boost, CecilDaily.com reported, racking up nearly one third of the team's overall points.

In fact, Matthews' triple jump performance was highlighted by MDRunners.com as one of two elite performances in the boys 1A events.

The girls team for the Panthers came in seventh overall, according to the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA). The defending 1A girls state champion from 2012, Boonsboro, hung onto its title in 2013, MPSSAA reported.
