Two Killed in Officer-Involved Shooting in Elkton: Police

Police said a man and woman allegedly fled from Delaware to Cecil County, where they were fatally shot.

ELKTON, MD — Two people wanted in Delaware were fatally shot in an Elkton hotel room Tuesday morning after authorities tried to serve them warrants, according to Maryland State Police.

The 25-year-old man and woman have not yet been identified publicly so that next of kin may be notified.

Delaware State Police had asked on Monday for Maryland's assistance in the case, which involved a felony warrant for possession of firearms and a shooting earlier this week, Maryland State Police spokesman Greg Shipley said. There were also charges related to stolen drugs, he added.

Before 10 a.m., Maryland state troopers and Cecil County sheriff's deputies knocked on the second-floor hotel room at New Eastern Inn, where police said officials told them the alleged Delaware fugitives were staying.

Authorities announced their presence and identified themselves as police outside the room in the 200 block of East Pulaski Highway, and they ordered the suspects to drop their weapons.

One officer saw a man through the window raising a handgun, Shipley said. The man stepped outside, raised the handgun, and at least one officer fired, he continued.

Seconds later, Shipley said the woman came out with a raised handgun and officers shot her. Both suspects were pronounced deceased at the scene, according to Shipley.

Cecil County officials had advised citizens to shelter in place and avoid the area Tuesday morning.

At approximately 11 a.m., the Cecil County Sheriff's Office issued a traffic advisory that US 40/Pulaski Highway was closed between Delaware Avenue and MD 213/Augustine Herman Highway due to police activity. The roadway was closed to all through traffic, including pedestrians.

After 1 p.m., Cecil officials reported the shelter in place order had been lifted.
