BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — Three people, including a Baltimore County police officer, were shot and injured when an armed suspect exchanged gunfire with law enforcement Sunday on a trail at a park in Pikesville, authorities said.

Officers responded shortly before 9 a.m. to a call about a suspicious person and indecent exposure along a trail in the area of Milford Mill and Scotts Level roads, where they encountered the armed person, who opened fire at them, according to police. The officers returned fire, and the encounter left the shooter, the officer and a bystander injured, police said.

“This one hits really close to home,” Baltimore County Councilman Izzy Patoka, who lives a half-mile from the scene and frequents the park where the shooting occurred, said at a news conference published on Facebook by the Baltimore County Police Department. “It is absolutely unacceptable and the community will rally behind our police officers.”

The officer was in critical but stable condition in intensive care as of Sunday afternoon, according to Dr. David Efron, medical director of R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, who spoke at the news conference. The shooter was in fair and stable condition, Efron said.

Both are expected to recover, Chief Robert McCullough said at the news conference, adding the bystander was in stable condition.

The officer, who was hit in the upper body and helicoptered to Shock Trauma, has been with the police department for about 1.5 years, according to authorities.

The officers involved in the shooting were wearing body cameras, police said.
