Milford Mill Wins Class 3A State Title

The Millers win their third state championship in four years in boys' basketball Saturday at the University of Maryland with easy victory over Potomac.

When Mike Silverman took over as Milford Mill boys' basketball coach this year, he knew some people wouldn't think the Millers would fare as well.

Milford Mill lost to eventual state champion Patterson in last year's region final and had some holes to fill. But the Millers got it all together, made it back to the state championship and captured the Class 3A title with an easy 84-55 win over Potomac Saturday at the University of Maryland's Comcast Center.

This was Milford Mill's third state title in four years. The Millers improved as the season went on and were too much for most people.

"Everyone doubted us," Silverman said. "But we set a common goal-- one day at a time."

The Millers took it slow and quietly developed into a very solid team, something that Potomac saw very quickly Saturday. Milford Mill took the lead right away, never trailed and turned the game into a blow-out by the third quarter.

Justin Jenifer led the way with 17 points while Allen Costley added 16, and Bruce Watkins had 15. Jenifer also pitched in with seven rebounds and seven assists.

Costley literally had a perfect day. He made all six of his shots from the field, and all four of his free throws and played hard throughout.

"I had to come out for the team," he said.

Milford Mill  had a 41-26 lead at halftime and went up 66-39 after three. The Millers were just too big, too fast and too athletic for the Wolverines.

"I'm really proud of these guys," Silverman said. "It's a great team. It was all of us together."

No one doubts them any more.
