Put your money where your mouth is

In today’s mercurial employment market there’s an increasing need to consistently and systematically retrofit our skills. Competition will always be around. So what? The most important thing is to remain relevant and competitive. In laymen’s terms: We have to consistently challenge ourselves.

Unemployment and underemployment is sobering at best. People who find themselves in this situation go into crisis management mode in an effort to keep the necessities intact for themselves and their families.

What does that look like?

Learning new skills and implementing innovative ideas. Those are the ideas that you’ve talked about but have yet to put into action. The benefits to reinventing our careers and retrofitting skills is not only to advance our career and build our networks.

How much value do we add to the space that we profess to operate in?

(Now, that’s money right there.)

Our knowledge, skills, abilities and networks are futile if they benefit only us. Some intangibles are valuable.

In today’s news cycle, whether we love it or have a great disdain for politics, religion, world events or pop culture, society has a way of causing you to choose a side. We are indirectly placed in a position to express a thoughtful opinion about a variety of topics. Those that stand out among the clamoring on social media are those that have a solution to an issue – they have to be “bout it, bout it!” to quote the lyrical phrase of Percy Robert Miller (also known as rapper Master P).

In business terms, “put your money where your mouth is.” What are you willing to put up?
