AT&T Hosts Distracted Driving Awareness Event in Pikesville

AT&T's nationwide 'It Can Wait' campaign stops in Pikesville

We all do it. Whether we want to admit it or not, on almost a daily basis, we are putting our lives and the lives of others in danger. How you ask? By taking our eyes off the road to answer a text, check an email or even snap a selfie. Distractions on the road appear in many different forms, but chief among them is technology. In the moment, it is easy to justify checking that text, snap or insta while driving, but the bottom line is; It can wait!

AT&T wants to help drivers become educated on the immense dangers posed by distracted driving. On August 2nd, AT&T hosted an anti-distracted driving event in their Pikesville store, and used virtual reality technology to illustrate their message. Using AT&T’s Samsung Gear VR, attendees were able to safely insert themselves into scenarios of distraction behind the wheel. Users participated in an immersive experience that accurately conveys the devastating outcomes yielded by checking your phone while driving.

Attendees also received information about AT&T’s It Can Wait campaign, which they can share with family and friends to help educate others about the dangers of distracted driving.

This event was extremely timely because we are now in the midst of “The 100 Deadliest Days,” where the risk of accidents for drivers between the ages of 16-19 increases significantly. Crashes in this age group increase by nearly 16% over any other time of the year, due to the increased amount of teens on the road during the summer months. In the past year alone, 5,000 people have been killed in crashes involving teen drivers. Studies also show that 7 of 10 people engage in smartphone activities while driving.

AT&T’s “It Can Wait” campaign aims to reverse the trend of fatal accidents caused by distracted driving and educate drivers that no text, post or tweet is worth a life – it can wait!
