The Whirl of Sewing Machines Was Heard at Sinai Hospital Where Handcrafted Blankets Were Made to Comfort Patients

Sewing machines were the latest tools alongside stethoscopes and blood pressure cuffs to help patients at Sinai Hospital. Volunteers recently brought their sewing machines to the hospital to launch the new Blanket Project. They will be making blankets every month to provide comfort and support to individuals battling serious illnesses.

The Palliative Medicine Program at Sinai is spearheading the Blanket Project. It is designed to give adults being seen by Sinai’s palliative team unique handcrafted blankets made by dedicated volunteers.

Palliative care provides relief from pain and suffering as well as stress management through quality of life approaches for patients facing critical illnesses and their families. Palliative care can begin as soon as someone receives a diagnosis and continue through treatment by honoring patients’ wishes and values.

Sinai is buying the materials to make the blankets in collaboration with Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores. Sinai is part of LifeBridge Health, one of the largest health care providers in Maryland. It also includes Northwest Hospital, Carroll Hospital, Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital and other related subsidiaries and affiliates.
