POTOMAC, MD — A utility worker became trapped inside a trench collapse Tuesday while working on waterproofing a home in the Potomac area.
The incident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. at a single-family home at 9500 Falls Bridge Lane, just minutes away from the Potomac Village Shopping Center.
Pete Piringer, of the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, said the man had initially become trapped up to his shoulders but that workers at the site were able to remove some dirt before first responders arrived on scene.
"We have our technical rescue special operations folks on the scene, working to make sure that he is comfortable," Piringer said in a video posted to X.
"We are working diligently and expeditiously, but taking all our precautions as we bring in the necessary equipment and resources to the scene."
The man has remained conscious and alert throughout the ordeal.
Dozens of rescue workers are working the scene, including shock trauma and technical rescue teams. Piringer said Maryland State Police helicopters were tapped for the operation.
Road closures are in place at Falls Bridge Lane, between Falls Road and Newhall Road. Drivers should seek alternative routes to avoid delays.
